SYSTEM CONFIGURATION ==================== A 80286 processor or greater is required to use the HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0. Memory Recommendations The HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0 was designed to work with supported Windows 3.0 system configurations. For Black Only Print Mode using the Standard Black Black Blending method, 1 Mb (640 Kb conventional memory with 384 Kb extended memory) or more memory is recommended. For Black Only Print Mode using either the Grayscale Pattern or the Grayscale Scatter Black Blending method, 2 Mb (640 Kb conventional memory with 1408 Kb extended memory) or more memory is recommended. For Color/Composite Black Print Mode, 2 Mb (640 Kb conventional memory with 1408 Kb extended memory) or more memory is recommended. Disk Requirements The HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0 requires approximately 2 1/2 Mb of free disk space for installation of the driver and the three printer fonts that came with it (Courier, CG Times, and Univers). Using Serial (RS-232-C) Cables To use serial (RS-232-C) cables, make sure that "Flow Control" (in the Settings dialog box from the Ports dialog box in the Control Panel) is set to "Hardware." If you have connected your printer using one of the COMx ports, the Color Sample button in the Color Options dialog box will not generate correct output. Enhanced Error Detection The HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0 has the ability to detect printer error states such as out of paper or wrong print cartridge installed. This "enhanced error detection" mode is only available when the printer is connected directly to a computer (not over a network) with either a standard parallel (i.e., Centronics) or serial (i.e., RS-232-C) cable. When the printer is printing across a network, to a file, or through another third party software print product that receives input from a print file (e.g., LPT1.PRN, LPT1.OS2, etc.), the printer driver detects this, and enhanced error detection is not available. If you are encountering unresolvable hardware or software printing conflicts, try turning off the enhanced error detection to see if this resolves the problem. To turn off the enhanced error detection, add the following lines to the end of the WIN.INI configuration file (located in the directory in which Windows was installed), through the Notepad accessory: [STATDLL] override=yes If these lines are not added to the WIN.INI file, or if "override=no," the printer driver will default to using enhanced error detection. If the printer's "Initializing" status dialog remains on the screen for an inordinate amount of time and no error messages are displayed, check the following: 1. Does the Printer type in the HP DeskJet Series v2.1: Printer Setup dialog box match the printer being used? (e.g., If you are using a DeskJet 500 printer, is DeskJet 500 selected in the HP DeskJet Series v2.1: Printer Setup Dialog?) 2. Is the interface cable a standard parallel (i.e., Centronics) or serial (i.e., RS-232-C) cable? If not, try another cable and see if the problem persists. (Remember that, if you are using a standard serial cable, printing will be slow. 3. Is enhanced error detection enabled? If so, try overriding it, as described earlier in this section. Using Print Manager With enhanced error detection (see above) enabled, Windows' Print Manager is ignored by the HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0. With Print Manager enabled or disabled, you may continue to work in other applications while the application from which you are currently printing finishes the print job. Also, you may use Print Manager for network or other local printing with all printer drivers other than the HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0. With enhanced error detection disabled, you may use Print Manager with the HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0. This is not recommended, since it will usually take longer to print a document with Print Manager than without it. If you choose to use Print Manager with the HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0, you must first turn off the printer driver's enhanced error detection as described in the previous section and then place an "x" in the check box next to "Use Print Manager" in the Control Panel. Printer Support The HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0 supports color, grayscale, and black and white printing for the HP DeskJet 500C printer. This printer driver supports grayscale and black and white printing for the HP DeskJet 500, HP DeskJet PLUS, and HP DeskJet printers. For all HP DeskJet printers, the black print quality will be the same. The HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0 does not support internal printer fonts, font cartridges, or soft fonts. To access these fonts, use the HP DeskJet Family printer driver. See "Printing with the HP DeskJet Family Printer Driver" later in this document for more information. PERFORMANCE =========== The HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0 was designed to give you the best possible performance on your printer, but its output speed can be affected by the mode under which you run Windows. Under Standard and Enhanced modes, the following errors may occur depending on the number of applications you have open at one time and the amount of memory your computer system has: out of memory errors when printing, noticeably slow printing, or large point sizes not printing. Recommendations Most techniques for improving your printer's performance require freeing memory for the printer driver to use. The printer driver works like an application, the more memory that is available for the printer driver to use, the better the printer's performance. Try the suggestions below to improve printer performance if your printer is slow or you are having difficulty printing: Add extended memory to your computer system to increase printer performance. Close those applications that are not currently active and try printing again. PRINTING TRANSPARENCIES ======================= Printing color or black transparencies is supported in Windows on the HP DeskJet 500C printer using the HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 printer driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0. Printing transparencies with the black ink print cartridges (51608A or 51626A) may produce unsatisfactory results under extreme environmental (humid) conditions. Printing transparencies with the DeskJet 500, DeskJet PLUS, and DeskJet printers is not supported in Windows. Use only the HP LX JetSeries Transparency film: 51636F (U.S. Letter) or 51636G (A4). NETWORK SUPPORT =============== Network configurations with the HP DeskJet 500C, DeskJet 500, DeskJet PLUS, and DeskJet printers are not supported. Hewlett-Packard has not tested configurations where the printer is a shared device or a local device with the user running software from a network application server. USING ADDITIONAL SCALABLE TYPEFACES =================================== The HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0 supports all scalable typefaces in the HP MasterType Library format. You do not need HP Type Director 2.0 to use these scalable typefaces because the Intellifont type scaling technology has been built directly into the printer driver. You will, however, need to "reinstall" these typefaces using the HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0 if you already have installed them on your system. Information for installing HP MasterType Library format typefaces is available under "Problem Solving for the HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0" in your Software Information Guide. The Intellifont type scaling technology scales and rasterizes the HP MasterType Library format typefaces on your computer. The data is then sent to the printer as graphics data. This process differs from HP Type Director 2.0, which downloads fonts to RAM cartridges in the printer and then accesses them like soft fonts. RAM cartridges are not used by the HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0 and will not improve performance. ACCESSING THE WINDOWS SYMBOL SET ================================ The Windows Symbol set was included with the printer fonts that came with the HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0. A file named SYMBOL.WRI, included on the disk(s) that came with the driver, contains the ANSI code equivalency table for the Windows Symbol set. This file may be read by using the Windows 3.0 Write accessory. To use the Windows Symbol set, you will need to install the CG Times printer font and the Symbol screen font (SYMBOLE.FON that came with Windows). To access the Symbol character set, follow the instructions in the SYMBOL.WRI file. PRINTING WITH THE HP DESKJET FAMILY PRINTER DRIVER ================================================== The HP DeskJet Series v.2.1 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0 is a graphics data-based driver, and as such, converts all information sent to the printer to graphics data. If you are printing documents that contain mostly text and would like the ability to improve in your printer's performance, you may wish to print those files with the HP DeskJet Family printer driver. This driver came with your Microsoft(R) Windows 3.0 application package. To use it, select the HP DeskJet Family printer driver from the List of Printers in the Printers dialog box and set it up for use following the instructions in your Microsoft(R) Windows User's Guide. Both drivers may be installed at the same time and you may alternate between the two by Activating the appropriate driver in the Printers dialog box from the Control Panel.
